MOUNT VERNON — Skagit County residents are looking for answers as to how the government can affect how crude oil is shipped through local cities.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports that government leaders and emergency response officials met in Anacortes on Wednesday to address concerns about emergency preparedness and safety that have been raised at city council and school board meetings.
Representatives from refineries in Anacortes, the state Department of Ecology, the Skagit County Department of Emergency Management, and the Anacortes Fire Department gave brief presentations about the steps their organizations are taking to prevent oil train accidents like the one that derailed and caught fire early Wednesday in rural North Dakota.
The forum was the latest event locally to highlight growing concern over the increase in oil trains coming through the Skagit Valley.
