The state Department of Health is asking dog owners for their help in tracking ticks.

Health officials are asking dog owners to go online and fill out a brief, anonymous survey and to send the health department any ticks they find on their four-legged friends. The survey is available at this website.

Tick season has begun in Western Washington, and in the next few weeks, ticks will emerge elsewhere in the state.

“Many dog owners have found a tick or two on their furry friend after coming home from a walk outside,” said Liz Dykstra, entomologist for the Department of Health. “We’d like to know more about when and where they’ve picked up ticks, and if their dog has ever been diagnosed with a tick-borne disease.”

The survey and tick submission requests are part of a multiyear project the health department is doing to better understand tick-borne disease risks in our state.
