Clark County — A high school robotics team from Clark County recently competed in the Oregon City district competition, hosted by FIRST Robotics Competition, and took home the Industrial Safety Award and Industrial Design Award.
The team is made up of 34 students from Camas, Washougal and Hockinson high schools, and is in its eighth year participating in the international competition. Each team is paired with volunteer mentors from relevant technology industries, and other professionals volunteer their time as judges for the competitions.
Team 2471’s head mentor is Bruce Whitefield, who is a quality control manager at Linear Technology. This year’s competition calls for teams to build robots which can stack plastic totes. The team started brainstorming and constructing its robot, Tote-O-Stackins, right after the new year, and had six weeks to get the robot ready for competition. Next up, the team will compete in a second district competition, this one in Wilsonville, Ore., on Friday and Saturday for a chance to qualify for the Pacific Northwest Championships at Eastern Washington University in Cheney on April 1-4.
