SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR

High school students from five Southwest Washington counties competed in the regional fair on Feb. 28 at Skyridge Middle School, with 70 projects judged in multiple categories. These top two winners will compete in the international fair in May in Pittsburgh, with all expenses paid: Reesab Pathak, a student at Camas High School, with “Identification and Characterization of Novel and Universal CD8+ T-cell Responses that Correlate with Protection Against the AIDS Virus,” and Courtney Stump, a student at Columbia River High School, with “The Effect of Grilling Method on Concentrations of 7 Carcinogenic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Grilled Chicken Breasts.” Skyler Lemmon, from Skyview High School, was named alternate with “Making Biofuels From Algae.”

Additional first-place award winners were: Teaghan Cowles, Aislin Day, Michael Hewitt and Melinda Staub, Columbia River High School; Jonathan Abbott, Andrew Lim and Laura McDonnell, Skyview High School; Nkemdilim Aduka, Jon Bartlett, Megan Chow and Brenton Riddle, Camas High School.

Other award winners were: Zoe Clute, Alfonso Gonzalez and Christina Kenoski, Columbia River High School; Bryce Pettit Estelle, Skyview High School; Bella Alexander, Kathy Chen, Daniel Fan, Rachel Greene, Maxine Hood, Sophie Shoemaker and Noah Thompson, Camas High School.
