The Prairie Falcons made a bit of history Friday at the Tacoma Dome. It did not translate into a win, though.
West Seattle pulled away from Prairie in the closing minutes for a 54-45 victory in the consolation bracket of the Class 3A state girls basketball tournament, ending Prairie’s season. Emily Fiso led the Wildcats with 14 points.
Prairie attempted a tournament-record 45 3-pointers and tied a record by making 11, but the team did not overcome its shooting woes. Prairie only had five turnovers but made just 16 of 70 shots — 23 percent.
“It’s definitely frustrating,” said sophomore Jozie Tangeman, who made four 3-pointers and scored 12 points, tied for team high with Cherita Daugherty.
Tangeman was quick to point out that even with all that, the Falcons were still in this. Prairie trailed by eight early in the fourth quarter but twice got to within two points.
Daugherty’s final basket with 3:22 to play made it 45-43 West Seattle. Prairie would not score again until the final three seconds of the game.
The younger players are already looking ahead to the future.
“It was a lot of fun. I couldn’t have asked for better people to be here with,” Tangeman said. “It just shows us what other teams are like. We have to work harder.”
Junior Natalie Whitesel is optimistic, too.
“We got here. That’s one more step than last year,” she said of making it to the dome. “We always have something to work for next year.”
