Seton Catholic College Preparatory High School plans to break ground on a new school this fall. The new building is scheduled to open fall 2016.

The school owns 12 acres at the northwest corner of Northeast 89th Street and Northeast 64th Avenue.

Since Clark County’s only private Catholic high school opened in leased space six years ago, enrollment has increased between 8 and 10 percent annually. Anticipated fall 2015 enrollment of 165 students puts the school at capacity.

“We’ve been growing at a rate beyond what we anticipated. We’re bursting at the seams,” said Tricia Roscoe, president at Seton Catholic. “Every nook and cranny is abuzz with kids at lunchtime.”

The project’s first phase is to build a 35,000-square-foot school building, a 10,000-square-foot gymnasium and a parking lot on 5.9 acres.

Later, athletic fields for soccer, football and track will be developed. When the school is completed, capacity will be between 450 and 500 students.

The current facility encompasses 14,000 square feet of leased space at 811 N.E. 112th Ave. The campus has a weight room, an outdoor basketball court and a small field where kids can kick around a ball, but the school leases practice fields and gyms for the 12 sports it offers students.

“It’s time for us to get our permanent campus,” Roscoe said. “With a building project of this size, we’ll be launching a significant capital campaign.”

The new site is about five miles from the current leased building.

The 2015-2016 tuition at Seton Catholic is $11,400. The school awards about $300,000 annually in scholarships. About half of the students receive scholarships.

Tuition is lower than private Catholic high schools in Portland: La Salle, $12,282; Central Catholic, $12,740; St. Mary’s, $13,125; and Jesuit, $13,400. Seton Catholic’s tuition is comparable to two semesters at Washington State University, which costs $11,386 for resident undergraduates.

The project is currently undergoing county planning approval and permitting. To make a public comment on the application, contact Richard Daviau, richard.daviau@clark.wa.gov, 360,397-2375, ext. 4895, by July 8.
