Union High grad and Chico State golfer Alistair Docherty captured the 106th Oregon Amateur Championship on Saturday.
Docherty beat Dylan Wu of Medford, Ore., 2 and 1 at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha to claim the title.
And it was a battle over 36 holes as Docherty only had the lead after the first hole and then didn’t lead again until the 31st hole. He trailed by as many as five during the first 18 holes.
“It’s amazing what can happen when the putter gets hot,” Docherty posted on Twitter.
Docherty pulled even with Wu on the 29th hole, then went 1-up on the 31st and 2-up after the 33rd.
The semifinal on Friday was equally dramatic as Docherty beat Portland’s Joel Johnson 1-up, only leading after winning the 18th hole.
During the tournament, Docherty won his quarterfinal 3 and 1 over Alex Wrenn of Lake Oswego and won 2 and 1 over Portland’s Nicklaus Baines in the round of 16. He needed 20 holes to beat Calvin Green of Springfield, Ore., in the round of 32, and opened with a 4 and 3 win over Dean Stevenson of Portland.
Docherty was named second team Division II All-American at Chico State this past season. He won the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament in April, and the Wildcats made it as far as the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.
