An 18-year-old man suspected of robbing a man of his backpack Thursday evening in Battle Ground appeared in Clark County Superior Court on Friday.
Brandon Osorio of Vancouver faces an allegation of first-degree robbery.
A co-defendant, William J. Eggert, 16, was sent to juvenile court. He, too, faces an allegation of first-degree robbery.
A third suspect has not yet been arrested. He was described as an 18-year-old man with medium dark complexion, black Afro hair, 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, according to Battle Ground police.
Residents in the 500 block of Southwest 12th Street reported a disturbance about 6:45 p.m. Thursday. Officers arrived and found a 24-year-old man who said he’d been “jumped” by three males. The man said he didn’t know any of his assailants and that they tried to take his backpack from him as he was walking to his car. He said he had been visiting a friend, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Superior Court.
The man told police that the assailants pushed him down and began “stomping” on his head and arms in an attempt to wrest his backpack from his grip. They fled when he started screaming for help, the affidavit says. He was not taken to a hospital for his injuries, police said.
Officers located Osorio and Eggert later that evening. The victim positively identified them, court records said.
Eggert reportedly told police that he and Osorio had been talking about ways to get money. They then ran into a third male on the street and talked about beating somebody up and taking his things, according to court documents.
Eggert allegedly told police that they chose to attack the victim because he was carrying a “big backpack,” the affidavit says.
Judge Daniel Stahnke appointed attorney Bob Yoseph to represent Osorio, set bail at $75,000 and scheduled a June 26 arraignment.
