VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARDS

Brian Lusby, a 2015 graduate of Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, received the Prudential Certificate of Excellence for volunteer service, the President’s Volunteer Service Award and a letter of congratulations from President Obama. Lusby is the current president of the Southwest Washington Red Cross Youth Council and has raised funds for disaster services, organized school blood drives, and participated in events to support services to armed forces. He is a CPR/First Aid instructor and has taught life-saving skills to more than 400 people, and instructed others in blood-borne pathogens, professional rescue, health care provision and wilderness survival.

Madison Rooney, a 2015 graduate of Ridgefield High School, received the President’s Volunteer Service Award after completing nearly 500 hours of community service working for the Clark County Youth Commission. Rooney plans to attend Clark College as she pursues a degree in civil engineering. In addition to volunteering, horses are her passion; she works with a trainer at Command Performance Training Center, rehabilitating and training horses. She has worked extensively with a horse, Keylijah, who was rescued from a burning barn, by providing proper nutrition, physical therapy, and practice for competition.

MAGNA CARTA ESSAY AWARDS

Local high school students wrote essays in recognition of the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, considered the premier document in the field of human rights. One student from each participating high school was named a winner by the Clark County Magna Carta Observance Committee. Each school’s winner received $500. Many of the students will be present at a countywide celebration of the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, with historical re-enactors, at noon Saturday at the bandstand near Officers Row in Vancouver. The winners are:

Rubyna Ali, Skyview High School; Grant Bollin, Columbia Academy; Sydney Burres, Camas High School; Alex Carstens, Washougal High School; Sarah Crull, Summit View High School; Elizabeth Cusanelli, Heritage High School; Emily Dick and Emily Turcic, King’s Way Christian School; Astrid Dubois, iTech Preparatory; Elizabeth Hossner, Fort Vancouver High School; Dakoda Hughes, Battle Ground High School; Madison Laycoe, Ridgefield High School; Emily McCoy, Prairie High School; Katie McNichol, Seton Catholic; Colin Newton, Columbia River High School; Shana Newton, Washington State School for the Blind; Alyssa Peterson, Cedar Tree Classical Christian School; Lauren Rath, Hockinson High School; Brandy Wales, Hudson’s Bay High School; Kurt Wohlers, La Center High School and Schubert Yu, Evergreen High School.

MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS

Camas High School won top honors at the statewide 5th Avenue Awards Honoring High School Musical Theater, June 8 in Seattle, for its hit show, “Cabaret.” Camas brought home the Outstanding Overall Musical Production award, and also the Special Honors: Educational Impact award.

Andrew Hensen, from Camas High School, received the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, for his role in “Cabaret.” He and the outstanding actress winner will travel to the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City this month.

Battle Ground High School, with “The 1940s Radio Hour,” and Hockinson High School, with “Little Shop of Horrors,” tied for the Outstanding Orchestra award.

Melissa Bailey, from Heritage High School, won Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Featured Ensemble Role, for her role as Grandma in “The Addams Family.”

Bethany Burton, from Camas High School, won Special Honors: Student Achievement.

YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Recent eighth-graders from Canyon Creek Middle School, Tori Corkum, Gabe Dinnel, Rachel McDonald and Jasmyne Mason, received Youth Achievement Awards from the Clark County Youth Commission at a recent countywide celebration honoring youth who have demonstrated personal growth and made contributions to the community.
