Two citizens who are carrying on the work of the late Val Joshua, a leader in the local African American community and a former board president of the YWCA Clark County, will be honored with awards in Joshua’s memory on June 17.
The public is invited to attend the annual free event, which is sponsored by the YWCA.
Diana Perez will receive the Val Joshua Racial Justice Award for her work as president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, the local chapter of a national organization, which she re-started in 2011. Over the last four years, Perez has developed the group into a pivotal community organization that works on civil rights issues, law enforcement relations and developing youth leadership opportunities for the local Latino community.
LaQuoya Tyler, a graduating senior at Fort Vancouver High School, is the recipient of the Val Joshua Youth Social Justice Award and Scholarship; she is also one of four recent recipients of the YWCA Clark County’s Young Woman of Achievement Award and Scholarship.
