Spotlight on youth

AWARDS FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE

Tina Bao, a junior at Mountain View High School, received the Prudential Certificate of Excellence for volunteer service, the President’s Volunteer Service Award and a letter of congratulations from President Obama. Bao is a member of the Southwest Washington Red Cross Youth Council and president of the Mountain View High Red Cross Club. She has worked on raising funds for measles vaccines for children in developing countries, and was involved in the Youth Leadership Development Conference for high school students at Camas High School this year, where she served as an instructor to her peers about leadership skills, CPR, and First Aid.

NATIONAL COLLEGE-SPONSORED MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS

The students listed below have been named National Merit Scholarship winners, based on their exceptional academic ability and potential for success in college studies. The scholarships provide between $500 and $2,000 annually, for up to four years, at the institution financing the scholarship.

Matthew Arnett, a senior at Evergreen High School, plans to study secondary education at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.

Jonathan Bush, a senior at Mountain View High School, plans to study mechanical engineering at Arizona State University.

Cole Demert, a senior at Mountain View High School, plans to study marketing at Arizona State University.

NATIONAL HISTORY BEE CHAMPIONSHIPS AWARD

Andrew Douglas, a sixth grader at Jason Lee Middle School, competed at the National History Bee finals—elementary division—on Memorial Day weekend in Louisville, Ky., placing fifth overall. At the competition, 750 regional winners from throughout the U.S. competed. On the first day, Andrew advanced to the finals, taking first place in the Citizenship Bee category, where students answered questions about American history, government, and current events. He is the son of Dave and Sara Douglas.

WASHINGTON AEROSPACE SCHOLARS PROGRAM, MUSEUM OF FLIGHT

Local high school juniors have been accepted into the Washington Aerospace Scholars Summer Residency program, this July at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. They will collaborate with other students to design a human mission to Mars with guidance from engineers, scientists, university students and educators. The local students are Riley Coffman, Washougal High School; Joshua Nygaard, Columbia River High School; and Scout Osborne, La Center High School.
