Danielle Newton of Battle Ground received a master of arts in January.

Honored educators

BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL

Kelly Christel, health sciences career instructor at Battle Ground since 1989, has coordinated American Red Cross blood drives at the school for 25 years, and was honored for her longtime dedication at a recent school assembly by the Red Cross. During her tenure, she expanded the program and coordinated 60 blood drives, with 5,814 pints collected. The school’s March blood drive was Christel’s last, as she will move out of the area this summer.

CLARK COUNTY SKILLS CENTER

Andrew McColley, chef instructor in the Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts program at Clark County Skills Center, was named best culinary educator in the West by the American Culinary Federation. He was honored at the federation’s Central/Western conference this spring in Indianapolis. McColley has 30 years of experience in the culinary industry and has been a chef instructor at the Skills Center for 20 years.

MOUNTAIN VIEW HIGH SCHOOL

Eric Smedsrud and Samuel Ormson, band and orchestra teachers at Mountain View High School, were the recipients of OnPoint Credit Union’s 9-12 Educator of the Year award. In their job-share position, they have worked to advance the instrumental music program at Mountain View, which has grown to 18 percent of the school’s student body. They have been lauded for their focus on student experience, group achievement and individual growth. Both will receive their mortgages paid for six months by OnPoint Community Credit Union, plus $1,000 for resources and supplies for the school.

Sara Ashback of Ridgefield received a $5,000 Schweiger Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by Tarlow Naito & Summers.


UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Samantha Hahn; Chelsea Hiller and Patrick Moynihan, all of Vancouver, have been initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON

Tucker Stuart of Vancouver was named to the winter 2015 dean’s list.

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY

Steven Andrews of Vancouver graduated in May and received a Knebelman Outstanding Senior Award from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Tyler Hogan of Battle Ground received a $1,500 Edward R. Meyer Endowed Scholarship in Pre-Medicine, a $1,000 Arnold and Julia Greenwell Memorial Scholarship and a $150 Richard E. Morton Pre-Medicine Scholarship from the College of Arts and Sciences.
