The Columbian won 14 awards for its staffers’ work in 2014 in a five-state competition organized by the Society of Professional Journalists.
Five first-place awards were for Business Column, Crime & Justice Reporting, Editorial & Commentary, Personalities Reporting and Print Headlines.
The Columbian competed with medium-sized daily newspapers with 16 to 50 staffers in all but the Online News Video, Graphics & Illustration and Visuals categories, which were judged against publications of all sizes.
The annual contest included entries from news outlets in SPJ’s Region 10, which is Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Categories included daily newspapers, nondaily newspapers, alternative newsweeklies, magazines, television stations, radio, freelance reporters and websites.
The awards were announced Saturday at the SPJ Oregon and Southwest Washington Chapter’s annual banquet in Albany, Ore.

Business Column
• First place, Aaron Corvin (June 1; June 15; Sept. 7).
• Second place, Gordon Oliver (Feb. 23; March 16; May 18).
Business Reporting
• Third place, Aaron Corvin, “Second thoughts on 3 oil terminals.”
Personalities Reporting
• First place, Lauren Dake, “Herrera Beutler charts her own course.”
Print Headlines
• First place, Merridee Hanson (April 18; April 27; May 4; May 25; Dec. 14; Dec. 15).
Short Feature Story
• Second place, Tom Vogt, “Volcano’s glacier caves explored.”
Sports Feature Story
• Second place, Paul Valencia, “Burgeoning team joins cancer fight.”
Graphics & Illustrations
• Third place, Marsha Matta (March 23; June 1; Aug. 17).
Online News Video
• Second place, Zachary Kaufman, “Crude Connection — From North Dakota to the Northwest.”
