For the seventh consecutive year, a team from CrossFit Fort Vancouver has qualified for the CrossFit Games.

By placing fourth in the CrossFit Western Regional that concluded on Sunday at the Tacoma Dome, a team of six athletes from CrossFit Fort Vancouver secured a spot in the world championship event.

Jessica Core of CrossFit Fort Vancouver qualified to compete individually in the women’s competition at the CrossFit Games. Core placed third in the Western Regional.

The top five women, top five men and the top five teams from the regional qualify for the CrossFit Games. The ninth CrossFit Games take place July 21-26 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Three of the six athletes on the CrossFit Fort Vancouver team are new members this year. CrossFit Fort Vancouver owner Adam Neiffer, Bryan Weed and Andrea Roozen were on the team that placed 24th at the Games in 2014. Mathew Hornung, Eva Scherer and Kristina Metz made the team this season.

“To be able to qualify (for the Games) with three new people is a great accomplishment,” Neiffer said. Adding to the challenge was a new regional format that combined Western Canada with the Pacific Northwest to form a Western Regional.

CrossFit Fort Vancouver staked its claim by winning the two Friday events. Entering Sunday’s final event, only eight points separated first place and fourth, Neiffer said.

Only CrossFit Fort Vancouver and CrossFit Invictus of San Diego have qualified seven consecutive years for the Games, according to Neiffer.

Allan Dunlap of CrossFit Fort Vancouver placed 10th among individual men at the regional.

Tibbits wins junior PGA golf event

Spencer Tibbits of Vancouver won the Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship on Sunday at Lake Spanaway Golf Course in Tacoma.

Tibbits, 16, shot a 66 on Sunday to finish seven strokes ahead of runner-up Sam Warkentin of Bainbridge Island. The victory earns Tibbits a spot in the Junior PGA Championship, to be played Aug. 3-6 at Miramont Country Club in Bryan/College Station, Texas.

Tibbits opened with a 67 on Saturday and finished the 36-hole tournament at 133. The seven stroke victory over Warkentin reversed last week’s result at the Washington Class 3A high school state tournament, which Warkentin won by three strokes over Tibbits. Tibbits, a sophomore at Fort Vancouver High School, won the state 3A high school title as a freshman.

The Junior PGA Championship is open to one boy and one girl champion from each of the 41 PGA Sections, champions of the nine PGA Junior Series events, winners of select national junior tournaments conducted throughout the year and special invitees who have yet not turned 19 as of the final round of the championship.

Brian Humphreys of Washougal tied for 18th in the Pacific Northwest Junior PGA boys tournament with a score of 152.

Ellen Secore of Portland won the girls Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship. Taylor Hartley of Vancouver tied for ninth in the girls division.
