Police have arrested a man they say may have attempted to kidnap a young girl at a Vancouver Wal-Mart on Saturday.

At about 3 p.m., the man contacted the girl and attempted to walk out of the store with her, police said. He was not known to the victim or her parents, police said.

The child was not hurt and was reunited with her family.

The suspect then fled the store, at 221 N.E. 104th Ave., near Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard and Interstate 205.

Police later arrested the suspect, whom they identified as 45-year-old Steven W. Hayes, in Southeast Portland. Hayes was booked into the Multnomah County Jail, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
