Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corp. announced on Tuesday that it will add up to 30 jobs in Vancouver following an expected 18,750-square-foot expansion of its manufacturing facility, 5713 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd.

Jay Scovie, director of corporate communications for Kyocera International Inc. in San Diego, said by email that Kyocera is experiencing demand for its products manufactured in Vancouver. Those include mechanical and structural ceramics that are used by semiconductor, medical equipment, aerospace and energy-related markets, he said.

Kyocera, which has 100 employees in Vancouver, recently submitted a preliminary application to the city of Vancouver for the expansion on the south side of its existing 40,000 square-foot building. The company also proposes to add 47 parking spaces, for a total of 119 spaces on the 14-acre property.

The company did not set a projected date to begin or complete construction. In its request for a preliminary review, Kyocera said it would request an expedited review process of 90 days. That schedule anticipates that the company would submit its formal application in September, which would lead to city approval in December or early January.

In his email, Scovie said the expansion “may ultimately require up to 30 new positions” at the facility but offered no date for the job expansion.

Kyocera is a multinational corporation headquartered in Kyoto, Japan, that was founded in 1959 as a producer of fine ceramics. The company’s products combine ceramics with metal and plastics to produce a variety of components for industrial uses. It established its Vancouver facility, which manufacturers cutting tools and advanced ceramic components, in the early 1980s.

The preliminary conference on the company’s proposal will be at 9 a.m. July 30 at Vancouver City Hall, 415 W. Sixth St. Greg Turner, case manager for the city’s review of the proposal, can be reached at 360-487-7883 or Greg.Turner@cityofvancouver.us.
