Running back leaving Evergreen due to family move

The Division I football recruit from Evergreen who met with Camas football coaches in the spring to inquire about eligibility is now in the process of enrolling at Union High School.

“I am officially a Union Titan,” Rey Green announced Monday morning on Twitter, saying goodbye to his teammates at Evergreen.

Officials from Evergreen Public Schools and Union High School confirmed that the family has shown documentation of a sales agreement for a home within Union’s boundary. If the entire family unit moves into that home, and if the family fills out the proper paperwork confirming the change of address, Green would be immediately eligible to play football at Union.

Green and his grandfather, Carl Green, met with Camas coach Jon Eagle earlier this year. That meeting led to the Camas athletic department being placed on probation after a month-long battle with the Greater St. Helens League and other Washington Interscholastic Activities Association sanctioning bodies.

Eagle was initially suspended for four games. Carl Green told WIAA officials that Eagle did not recruit his grandson, and Eagle’s suspension was rescinded.

Union football coach and athletic director Gary McGarvie said he had no contact with Rey Green nor anyone representing Rey prior to a meeting in the office of Union principal Brian Grimsted on July 9.

“That’s the model we have at Union, because I have dual roles,” McGarvie said. “When it’s a football kid (inquiring about moving) we meet with the principal because it’s a conflict.”

Carl Green confirmed McGarvie’s account, that the family had no contact with McGarvie until that meeting with Grimsted.

“My understanding is they have shown the Union administration a purchase agreement with an address that is located within the Union boundary,” said Cale Piland, the athletic director for all Evergreen Public Schools. “If his entire family unit moves to the Union boundary, he is eligible.”

Northwest Elite Index ranks Green as the fourth best running back in Washington among incoming seniors. Green had more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage as a sophomore. Injuries slowed him as a junior, but he has been excelling in offseason camps and clinics.

Evergreen went 2-7 last season, including 1-5 in the 4A Greater St. Helens League. Union finished 9-2, finishing second in the league at 5-1.

Green tweeted a photo of a message he sent to friends and coaches. He thanked everyone at Evergreen, calling his experience “great,” from football to the classroom. He said he has met a lot of lifelong friends, learned valuable lessons, and that he had done a lot of growing up at Evergreen.

“Due to my family moving, I will be transferring and attending Union High School in the fall. Again, thank you to coaches, teachers, and counselors. I am officially a Union Titan!”
