Weather Eye: Remembering the long-dried rains of June

Outside of a few pesky hit-and-miss showers, the cobwebs in my rain gauge are getting pretty thick this month. So how much rain did we get in June? It was spotty, with some areas heavier than others. And if you can’t remember, no worry — all June’s rain fell in the first few days. Seems so long ago, doesn’t it?

So let’s review some June rainfall reports from your friends and neighbors:

Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 0.30 of an inch; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 0.94 of an inch; Bob Starr, Cougar, 1.31 inches; Phil Delany, Dole Valley, 1.70 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 0.94 of an inch; Pete Conrad near Tukes Mountain, 0.79 of an inch; Merle Moore, two miles west of Yacolt, 0.99 of an inch; Judy Darke, Felida, 0.83 of an inch; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 1.19 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha, 0.56 of an inch.

Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 0.10 of an inch; Irving St. Germain, Prune Hill, 0.63 of an inch; Tom Dixon, Amboy, 0.86 of an inch; Matt Sloan, McLoughlin Heights, 0.27 of an inch; Murphy Dennis near Clark County Rifles, 1.79 inches; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 1.18 inches; Gary Collins, Brush Prairie, 1.13 inches; and Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 0.86 of an inch.

Roland Dersken, our friend from the Vancouver up north, reported 0.44 of an inch. I measured 1.06 inches here in Salmon Creek.

Half a dozen lucky ones had over 1 inch of rain, but that is long gone and things are dry and dusty. Since weather observer Murphy Dennis’ 1.79 inches was the winner in the rain competition for June, I will share his words in his email about last month, “Dry days for June, 28; hot days for June, most of them; yard mowing days, about 2; and beer drinking days, all of them.”

Yep those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are in full swing.
