Community notebook: King, Sudbeck medal at Hershey national track meet

Bailey King of Vancouver and Haleigh Sudbeck of Washougal earned medals during the 2015 USA Track and Field Hershey National Youth Outdoor Championships. The meet concluded on Sunday at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill.

King placed second in the discus for ages 17-18 with a throw of 174 feet, 5 inches. King also finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 54-2½.

Sudbeck finished third in the hammer throw for girls ages 17-18 with a mark of 143-11.

Season ends for Vipers football team

The Bellingham Bulldogs beat the visiting Clark County Vipers 42-24 on July 11 in the first round of the Pacific Football League playoffs.

Clark County finished with an overall record of 3-6. Bellingham advances to face the Portland Raiders in a semifinal game in the Northwest semi-professional football league on Saturday in Oregon City.

Bellingham raced to a 42-0 halftime lead in beating the Vipers.

Players for the Vipers in 2015 were team owner Matthew Tefs, Tre Moreland, Marvin Thomas, Darryn Say, Manuel Say, Manuel Gibbons, Kevin Nguyen, Tylan Lang ll,James Young-Lewis, Jordan Berni, Damaien Young, Casey Fields, Todd Clawson, Treve Ensley, Andrew Sedacy, Ronald Briggs, Troy Hernandez, Anthony Randall, Shane Miller, Justin Saldano, Donovan Cunningham, David Saylors, Brian Coxell, Alex Pasi, Reese Keller, Rick Garcia, Rami Awad, Cody Hunter-Brown, Patrick Chiotti, Taylor Archer and JR Williams.

Half marathon, 8-K run slated Sunday in B.G.

The Harvest Hay Half Marathon and 8-K Races take place on Sunday in Battle Ground.

The races, including a 4-kilometer family fun run, start and finish at the Battle Ground Village. The courses follow rural roads.

Through Wednesday, online registration at www.getboldevents.com costs $70 for the half marathon, $40 for the 8-kilometer, and $30 for the fun run. On-site registration costs $80 for the half marathon and $45 for the 8-K.

The event benefits the North County Community Food Bank, with participants encouraged to bring donate three nonperishable food items.

Showtime wins baseball event at Centralia

Showtime Baseball’s College Prep team won a college showcase tournament held Wednesday through Sunday in Centralia.

And Showtime Baseball’s Junior Prep team of 15-year-old players took fifth place in the 18-and-younger tournament that featured 58 teams and was watched by representatives of more than 50 college baseball programs, according to Billy Hayes of Showtime Baseball.

The College Prep team went 7-0 and won three elimination games on Sunday to capture the championship. In the final game, Showtime rallied to beat Rijo Athletics of Bothell 5-3 in extra innings.

Former Olympians at local gymnastics clinic

Former Olympic gymnasts Elise Ray and Kelly Garrison will participate in a one-day Olympic Dreams Camp on Friday at Northpointe Gymnastics in Vancouver. The clinic for ages 6 and older runs 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Cost of the clinic is $80.

The former Olympians also will participate in the Northpointe College Preview Camp, which runs Friday through Sunday.

According to Northpointe CEO Jaime Parra, coaches from at least six college programs will attend that camp, with more than 50 gymnasts from around the nation registered.

Olympic wrestling champ visits Heritage

Four-time Olympic medalist Bruce Baumgartner is the featured coach at the Gold Medal Wrestling Camp, which takes place July 24-26 at Heritage High School.

The camp will run 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. each day. Cost is $150.

Baumgartner will be a featured coach on July 24 and July 25. The camp will focus on techniques.

Local driver wins at Woodburn Dragstrip

Cameron Loos of Brush Prairie won the high school division during the racing on Sunday at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Ore.

Dick Arnold from Washougal was runner-up in the super shifter classification.

The 38th-annual Les Schwab Challenge takes place Friday through Sunday at Woodburn Dragstrip.
