Thousands of dollars worth of equipment and tools were discovered stolen Saturday from an Evergreen Habitat for Humanity construction site in east Vancouver.
Executive Director Josh Townsley said he believes the theft happened Thursday or Friday at Mountain View High School, 1500 S.E. Blairmont Drive.
Staff went to the school’s construction site on Saturday morning and found that the Habitat trailer had been broken into through the roof. Power tools, saws and screw guns were among the items missing. Someone had apparently crawled — or tried to crawl — through a small vent in the roof.
The high school’s construction site is part of a “Geometry in Construction” program in which students learn math and use those skills to build a house. The trailer contained tools that are used at other sites around the county, Townsley said.
To replace the lost tools and repair the trailer, the organization is seeking donations. Those interested can visit www.ehfh.org/donate or send donations to Evergreen Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 871570, Vancouver, 98687.
“Our hope is to replace them this week,” Townsley said.
Meanwhile, Evergreen Public Schools is reviewing surveillance footage near where the trailer was parked.
Since 1991, Evergreen Habitat for Humanity has helped lower-income families build homes in Clark County. Homes are sold at no profit with a zero percent interest rate mortgage after the families contribute hours of sweat equity.
