Weather Eye: After that light rainfall, we settle back into warm, dry summer

Our long dry spell ended Sunday evening with enough moisture to squeeze out a measly 0.01 of an inch of rainfall. Close but no cigar as records go. A few more scattered showers drifted over the county, and Vancouver recorded 0.04 of an inch Monday.

It did little other than freshen the air a bit and make nasty water spots on your car. I doubt it even settled the dust.

One more weak system is slated for Wednesday, but it appears that will be a dry front. The mountains and coast are the best places to feel a spattering of rain drops. Temperatures will bounce around the 80-degree mark plus or minus, depending on the clouds. No excessive heat’s coming.

Those who had air conditioning during our recent string of hot muggy days I’m sure are grateful. I was, too, until I opened my electric bill over the weekend. Ouch! What a spike — but, for me, well worth it.

The Sunday and Monday rain seemed to be heavier the farther north you got from the Columbia River. I measured 0.03 of an inch Sunday and 0.14 of an inch Monday in Salmon Creek. There were, for the first time in a while, puddles in the streets.

The long-range general outlook calls for warmer and drier conditions the rest of the summer.

The short-term forecast charts I saw Monday show a mixed bag for the weekend. It could be cool with light showers, or sunny and warm in the mid-80s. Take your choice, and we will see in Thursday’s column what pops up.
