Investigators have not yet determined what caused a fire that destroyed a rural home in east Clark County on Wednesday morning.

The remnants of the home in the Fern Prairie area, which had collapsed into the basement, were still hot on Thursday, said Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Ken Hill. Firefighters continued dumping water on what was left of the house on Northeast 304th Avenue.

The fire was reported to 911 around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday by neighbors who heard explosions and said they saw fire and a column of smoke. A Clark County Sheriff’s deputy, who was the first to arrive at the house, said it was engulfed in flames.

Upon arrival, East County Fire & Rescue tried to keep the fire away from a large barn, a detached garage and a shop that was also on the property, said Chief Dean Thornberry.

The two-story house eventually collapsed into the basement. Without nearby hydrants, firefighters decided to let the fire burn out. Two dogs and two cats perished in the fire, Thornberry said.

All three of the residents hadn’t been home for at least several hours when the fire was reported, Hill said.
