Too hot for the Pops? Not a chance.

With temperatures climbing rapidly toward 80 degrees, the Vancouver Pops took the Esther Short Park stage Wednesday to kick off the city’s free Noon Concert Series. The homegrown, all-volunteer community orchestra has been raising smiles at parks, schools and other public spots since 1970. Meanwhile, the city’s equally free Science in the Park session was also taking place and teaching children about ocean life and the scientists who study it.

The two offerings are a happy combination: parents can enjoy some free tunes while their children are busy working with their hands, exploring what different scientists do. The Science in the Park sessions begin at 11 a.m. and last until 1 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 12.

Esther Short Park has never been busier and more popular, city officials have said, and concerts are always a huge draw. Here’s the whole schedule of free music — and scientific studies — in the park for summer 2015.

“Destination Downtown Noon Concert Series” and Science in the Park, noon Wednesdays:

• July 15, be an entomologist and uncover the world of bugs, with music by Diana Chittester.

• July 22, be a geologist and learn about rock types, with music by Lincoln’s Beard.

• July 29, be a wildlife biologist and research animals in their habitats, with music by Left Coast Country.

• Aug. 5, be a botanist and smell the flowers, with music by The Gravy.

• Aug. 12, be a chemist and discover chemical interactions, with music by Water Tower.

The other free music offered in Esther Short Park this summer is the “Riverview Six to Sunset Concert Series,” 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays:

• Today, Hit Machine

• July 16, Patrick Lamb

• July 23, Cloverdayle

• July 30, Flexor-T

• Aug. 6, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

• Aug. 13 Soul Vaccination

Also, from 1 to 3 p.m. on three Sundays, the city and Columbia Tech Center host the “Sunday Sounds Concert Series” at Columbia Tech Center, 1498 Southeast Tech Center Drive:

• July 26, Patrick Lamb Band

• Aug. 2, Johnny Limbo & The Lugnuts

• Aug. 9, Curtis Salgado
