Willie Nelson is a national treasure now, but in the 1950s, Vancouver knew him as “cotton-pickin’, snuff-dippin’, tobacca-chewin’, stump-jumpin’, gravy-soppin’, coffee-pot-dodgin’, dumplin-eatin’, frog-giggin’, hillbilly from Hill County, Texas.”
That was how the legendary singer-songwriter introduced himself every day on his “Western Express” radio show on KVAN, broadcast from Vancouver.
Nelson reminisced about his time as a DJ in the Pacific Northwest last year during an appearance on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show. The Columbian reported some highlights of that interview on June 23, 2014, in our “Off Beat” column.
Nelson arrived in Vancouver as a 23-year-old and became a hit on the local airwaves; he even had his own fan club, he told Stern.
