CATHLAMET — Traffic delays on state Highway 4 at milepost 34 east of Cathlamet will begin July 16 while two aging culverts at Elochoman Slough are replaced.

“This project is on a key route to popular fishing areas, so we are asking anglers to plan ahead,” said Lori Figone, Kelso area engineer for the state Department of Transportation.

In early August, crews will install automated traffic lights that will direct traffic through a single lane around the clock. The lane restriction is expected to continue until fall.

The culverts will improve fish passage for young salmon and steelhead into the spruce wetlands on the north side of the highway.

The Elochoman River culvert project is being financed with $1.1 million from the Bonneville Power Administration and $1 million from other federal and state sources.
