Runners from Clark County won championships in the 1,500 meters at the Track Town Youth League Championships, which took place on June 27 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Sam Geiger of Camas won the 1,500 for boys ages 11-12 with a time of 5:05.19. He won by more than four seconds in a race that featured 11 runners.
Shelby Fisher of Vancouver won the age 11-12 girls 1,500 meters with a time of 5:36.73. She won by more than four seconds in a race that also featured 11 runners. Fisher also was fourth in the 400 meters in 1:10.22.
The Track Town Youth League is a series of free all-comer meets for ages 8-14. The top two finishers in each vent at the local meets held across Oregon qualified for the June 27 championships. Competition included races of 100, 200, 400 and 1,500 meters plus the long jump and the turbo javelin.
The championship meet took place in conjunction with the USA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships at Hayward Field.
Track regional in Beaverton
Youth track and field athletes from Southwest Washington will be among those competing for spots in the USATF Junior Olympics National Championships during a regional championship meet which runs Thursday through Sunday at Jesuit High School in Beaverton.
The Evergreen Storm Track Team of Vancouver and the Flanagan Clan Girls Track Club of Woodland will be well represented at the USATF Region XIII Junior Olympic Championships. Athletes qualified during the Pacific Northwest Association championships on June 20-21 in Seattle. Results for Storm and for Flanagan Clan athletes at the Association meet are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.
Soccer team at national tourney
The Washington Timbers Green girls soccer team from Vancouver will play in the U.S. Youth Soccer Presidents Cup National Tournament from Thursday through Sunday in Overland Park, Kan.
The Far West region champions in the under-17 age division, Timbers Green will play each of the other three regional champions once, then play in either the title or third-place match on Sunday.
The Presidents Cup is the second tier of competitive youth tournaments staged by U.S. Youth Soccer and is separate from the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships.
Most of the players on the Timbers Green are entering their senior year of high school. The Timbers roster includes Jillian Bolke, Alexa Bowmer, Makyla Croco, Lily Delgadillo, Taylor Germer, Riley Gray, Emma Jimenez, Meleah Kainu, Rylee Macdonald, Alyssa Mehan, Nicolle Ohama, Alex Sanders, Olivia Schmitz, Amanda Shi, Brooke Shirley, Madison Smit, Madison Veltkamp and Sarah Yang. The team is coached by Senad Ramic.
CCRC 5K series continues
Jesse McChesney of Vancouver won the July 1 Clark County Running Club race.
McChesney, 27, completed the 5 kilometer Grass Valley Run in Camas with a time of 16 minutes and 14 seconds. He was 16 seconds in front of Vancouver’s Oscar Bauman.
Rachel Blair, 13, was the first female finisher. Her time was 19:25.
A total of 113 runners completed the second race on the Grass Valley course.
The CCRC summer series shifts to Salmon Creek for the July 8 5-kiilometer run on the Salmon Creek Trail. The out-and-back will start and finish near Klineline Pond, 1112 N.E. 117th St., in Vancouver. Participants should arrive by 6:30 for the 7 p.m. race, which costs $2 and is free for members of the CCRC.
Silver won at police, fire games
Don Bryant of Vancouver took the silver medal in the batch press competition for his division at the World Police and Fire Games in Fairfax, Va.
With a lift of 308 pounds, Bryant finished second in the 55-59 age group for lifters weighing 275.5 pounds or less. Gerald Carter of St. Paul, Minn., won the gold medal. Bryant is a retired Multnomah County corrections officer.
Jon Haase of Vancouver earned silver medals in both individual and team golf competitions. Haase is a sergeant with the Multnomah County Corrections Department.
Semi-pro football playoffs
The Clark County Vipers semi-professional football team will travel to Bellingham on Saturday for a Pacific Football League playoff game against the Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Civic Field. At 3-5, the Vipers made the playoffs by tying for fifth place in the nine-team league.
Baseball softball state tourneys slated
Six Little League-sanctioned state tournaments will be held in July in Clark County.
The Big League Baseball state tournament for ages 17-18 will include six teams including two from Clark County. It will run July 11-16 at Cascade Little League at the Harmony Sports Complex.
The age 10-11 baseball state tournament will run July 18-26 at Fort Vancouver Little League.
The Junior League baseball state tournament will be held July 18-25 at Glenwood Little League. The winner of that tournament for ages 13-14 will advance to the Junior League Western Regional, to be played Aug. 5-12 in Vancouver.
The age 9-10 softball state tournament runs July 11-17 at Glenwood Little League.
The two-team Senior Softball tournament for ages 15-16 will feature a local team from Di.strict 4 and be played on July 11-12 at Cascade Little League. At the same time, local teams from District 4 and District 6 will play July 11 for the Big League (age 17-18) softball state title at Cascade Little League.
Hockey team seeks host families
The Vancouver Rangers, a junior hockey team that will call Mountain View Ice Arena home in 2015-16, is looking for host families.
The team will play in the Western States Hockey League and include players ages 16 to 20 from around the world.
