Fireworks caused a blaze that destroyed one car, damaged another and nearly spread to a nearby apartment complex, fire officials said.
Residents at 1927 Brandt Road were setting off Roman candles, which caused a fire to catch on some arborvitae, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said.
The fire spread to a neighbor’s car, a Chevy Aveo, before spreading to the resident’s car, a Honda Civic, Scarpelli said. The Honda Civic was only partially damaged but the Aveo was totaled, she said.
The fire then came extremely close to igniting a four-unit complex, Scarpelli said. In all, the blaze caused an estimated $11,000 in damage.
The resident using the fireworks was cited for suspicion of violating fireworks curvew, Scarpelli said. Fire officials issued an additional eight citations for curfew violations, making a total of 38 citations for fireworks violations for this year’s holiday.
