The Gifford Pinchot National Forest will impose new restrictions on open campfires starting Friday, the U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday.
Effective July 3, campfires will only be allowed in metal fire pits or rings in developed recreation sites. Certain heat sources for cooking, such as portable stoves and gas lanterns, are also allowed.
The restriction means building and tending open campfires — including charcoal briquettes, cooking fires and warming fires — will be prohibited. The ban will remain in place “until further notice,” according to the forest service.
Violations can result in fines of up to $5,000 and up to six months in jail, according to the forest service.
The restriction comes on the heels of an announcement raising the Industrial Fire Precaution Level to Level II on the Gifford Pinchot forest. In both cases, officials cited extremely high fire danger in the forest.
