Abuse of vulnerable adults topic of forum

The Friends of the Elder Justice Center will cohost a conference Feb. 11 about legal issues and resources available for combating abuse of vulnerable adults.

The conference — The ABCs of Building an Elder Justice Center — is set for 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the education center at PeaceHealth Southwest Washington Medical Center, 600 N.E. 92nd Ave.

Presentations offer information on vulnerable-adult abuse, including how to root out financial exploitation; depression and loss, preparing a protection order; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues; and dementia and mental health.

Paul Greenwood, deputy district attorney with the San Diego Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, is the keynote speaker. He heads the office’s elder abuse prosecution unit.

The event is geared toward law enforcement officers, social workers, attorneys, elder advocates, guardians, healthcare professionals, bankers and case managers.

The fifth annual event is intended to raise awareness of vulnerable-adult issues and advance prevention efforts. Other cohosts of the event are the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, PeaceHealth, the Vancouver Police Department and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
