Freshman Peyton Wangler scored at the buzzer to lift the Hawks over the visiting Pioneers from Salem.

With 3 seconds left, Hockinson tried a lob inbound pass from midcourt that Elle Tilkin knocked to the floor. Wangler picked up the ball and hit a bank shot from the free-throw line.

Making her first career start, Wangler finished with 14 points. She was knocked to the floor trying to set a screen for Tilkin on the winning play, then recovered the ball in time to get off the game-winner.

Tilkin finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Hockinson (6-4).

Western Mennonite post Emma Gibb scored 26 points. A junior, Gibb is considered one of the best post players at any size school in Oregon. The Pioneers played in the Nike Interstate Shootout last weekend, going 1-3 against large-school opponents. Last season they finished second in Oregon’s Class 2A state tournament.

On Friday, Gibb had 16 points at halftime, and was one reason the visitors built a 23-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. But she had only three field goals after halftime as Hockinson outscored Western Mennonite 29-19.
