Seventh-graders at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Vancouver performed the ritual walking of the Stations of the Cross on Friday with a bilingual twist, reciting and singing in both English and Spanish.

“This is the first week of Lent,” said development director Debbie Durgan. “We do this every Friday through Easter.”

In addition to the procession, the ritual included a slide show displaying 15 famous paintings by Argentinian Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel — a human rights activist as well as an artist and architect — which reimagine Jesus’ final hours in a modern Latin American landscape of corruption, repression and violence.

Durgan said the goal was to connect Jesus with “the culture, religion and language of the Spanish-speaking world” in a way that resonates with students and the times they’re living in now.
