Washougal — A group of Hathaway Elementary School fifth-grade girls took a special lunch field trip last week to Hearth, where they learned about table manners as part of the Young Women in Action program.

The program is sponsored and staffed by the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club.

At the wood-oven bistro, the girls learned how to properly lay a napkin on their laps, bring bites of food up to their mouths and put their forks and knives on the plate once they were done eating.

Jocelyn Bowman, one of the Hathaway fifth-graders, enjoyed spending time talking with classmates she doesn’t normally speak with, as well as learning about table manners.

“It is rude to talk loudly on a cellphone in a restaurant,” she said in a release sent out by the club. “And besides, you want to talk to friends and family at the table with you.”

Young Women in Action is a free eight-week program for Hathaway fifth-grade girls which focuses on development of life skills, including friendship, health, hygiene, career, manners and etiquette.

A boys version of the program starts in April.
