The Panthers rallied late, but it wasn’t enough in the first-round of the 2A district tournament.

Trailing 28-19 at halftime, Washougal pulled within two points in the final minutes. The Panthers had a shot to tie the game with 8 seconds remaining, but Ryan Taylor’s 3-pointer was off the mark.

Washougal (15-6) faces Aberdeen at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out game at Centralia or Chehalis.

“They got out on us in the first half,” Washougal coach Malcolm Estes said. “We had trouble attacking their zone defense. Finally in the fourth quarter we got aggressive.”

Estes said his team had trouble adjusting after a two-hour trip to Black Hills, which is in Tumwater.

“It looked like we were asleep,” he said. “It was one of those nights on the road when things just didn’t go our way.”
