GO: Ideas for your weekend — Sweetheart’s Dance, Trail Band, wine tour

1) Dancing with Valentines

The Venersborg School House will be a place for love birds, with a Sweetheart’s Dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 14. Romantic couples 18 and older can enjoy a night of dancing with music, a photo station, refreshments and door prizes. The historic Venersborg School House is located at 24309 N.E. 209th St., Battle Ground. The Pearson Air Museum’s hangar will come alive with music of the 1940’s from the Beacock’s Swing Band. Recreating the era of World War II USO dances, the event will include swing dance lessons, light refreshments and a silent auction, with proceeds benefiting education programs at the national historic site. The monthly ballroom dance with the Swing Street Glenn Tadina Band will be a Sweetheart Ball. From 8 to 10:30 p.m. Feb. 13, dancers can float across the floor to a classic big band sound, accompanied by vocalist Kathy Stanton and Ken Willeford at the Clark County Square Dance Center, 10713 N.E. 117th Ave., Vancouver. 2) Go West

The Trail Band will be putting its best sound forward with a “Best of the Trail Band” concert. The eight-piece ensemble blends brass and string instruments to create music inspired by songs of the West, from folk tunes to Native American melodies. The band features five vocalists including Quarterflash’s Rindy Ross. Catch the Trail Band at 3 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Skyview High School auditorium, 1300 N.W. 139th St., Vancouver. 3) Wine lovers

This weekend is a great time to check out your neighborhood winery. The local vineyards and cellars will be pairing wine and chocolate for the Valentine’s-themed wine tour. Visitors can try the latest offerings, enjoy music, desserts and more at participating locations. 4) Cowboys and Westerns

The Professional Writers Series continues with Portland author Molly Gloss. Her best-selling works include “The Jump-Off Creek,” “Wild Life” and most recently “Falling From Horses.” She has earned an Oregon Book Award and the PEN West Fiction Prize. Gloss will discuss reinventing the Western novel. The conversation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 17 at the library, Room 240, Washington State University Vancouver, 14204 N.E. 5) Brain teasers

Visitors can turn Valentine’s Day in a true puzzle at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland. Its newest exhibit, “Mazes,” opens Feb. 14 with 13 interactive mazes to explore, along with illusions, puzzles and brain teasers that showcase how the mind works to solve challenges. From 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 14, children of all ages can Meet a Scientist, as local scientists share their research and knowledge with hands-on activities. Regular admission is $13; $9.50 for seniors and ages 3-13. For adults ages 21 and older, a special Valentine’s Day edition of OMSI After Dark will run 7 to 11 p.m. with trivia, romance books, acrobatics and the chemistry of condoms.
