Washougal — While school-age children might not be the neatest eaters, parents can be assured that the cafeteria kitchens at three Washougal School District buildings are quite clean.

Last month, the National Safety Foundation awarded its highest rating, Double Gold, to Jemtegaard Middle School, Gause Elementary and Washougal High School kitchens.

The National Safety Foundation is an outside company hired for independent inspections, and scores kitchens on food safety, as well as safety and health. All three schools scored perfect 100 percent ratings in both categories.

The inspection checks up on any issue from previous inspections, and evaluates staff compliance with safe food handling, as well as reviews safety training and if staff has an understanding of safety practices.

The mandatory safety equipment is also checked.
