VANCOUVER — Dan Sockle will discuss the rise of the Islamic State in a military history talk at 6 p.m. Friday.

The free talk will be at the 40 et 8 Chateau, 7607 N.E. 26th Ave., on the south side of 78th Street about a mile east of Interstate 5.

Sockle, a retired Army chief warrant officer, will discuss how radical Islamists formed a group known variously as ISIL or ISIS and began a campaign to create their own Islamic state in Southwest Asia.

Sockle had a 20-year Army career in intelligence and criminal investigation. The talk is part of the series of monthly military history talks sponsored by the Vancouver Barracks Military Association.
