A man was killed Saturday evening when he was struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross Highway 99 in Hazel Dell, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. during heavy rain in a dark area of the highway near Northeast 102nd Street, said CCSO Sgt. Randon Walker.
Walker said the man was walking from the east side to the west side of the highway and had already crossed the northbound lanes and the center median when he was struck by a full-sized pickup traveling south in the lane nearest the median.
The man was given CPR but pronounced dead at the scene, Walker said. He name was withheld pending notification of next of kin. He was carrying no identification.
The driver of the pickup, a 20-year-old Vancouver man, cooperated with law enforcement officers at the scene. Walker said there was no reason to believe drugs or alcohol were involved. The driver’s name was not released Saturday.
There is no marked crosswalk where Northeast 102nd Street intersects with Highway 99. The nearest signaled intersection with marked and metered crosswalks and street lights is at Northeast 99th Street.
The highway was closed for about two and a half hours for the investigation. The crash is being investigated by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit. No citations are expected.
