A natural gas leak in Vancouver closed part of East 12th Street on Monday afternoon and forced those inside a nearby Chase bank branch to evacuate.

Work near Broadway and 12th Street severed a 1-inch gas line around 2:30 p.m., prompting NW Natural and the Vancouver Fire Department to respond. Twelfth Street was blocked for two blocks east of Broadway during the incident.

Vancouver fire Capt. Davis Lund said the bank was evacuated as a precaution.

NW Natural crews turned off the gas to make repairs, company spokeswoman Melissa Moore said, and the leak was fixed in about an hour.
