Weather Eye: Windstorm blows in and out quickly; Christmas snow possible

windy day in the neighborhood Monday. Really windy, indeed.

Enough to down trees, cause power outages and send anything that wasn’t tied down escaping throughout the county. Plenty of outdoor Christmas decorations took a tumble. I saw a few Santas and snowmen in some peculiar positions.

Wind speeds ranged from 40-55 mph from Portland to Longview during the peak of the storm. It came with a fury and left just as fast, thank goodness. The Portland airport had a gust of 55 mph, while Pearson Field in Vancouver had a gust of 44 mph. I measured 54 mph here in Salmon Creek. The strongest this winter.

Moderate rain fell once again, keeping our string of rain every day this month intact. Records are being set for the wettest December and also the wettest month ever. Vancouver has tallied 14.54 inches of rain so far this month as of 4 p.m. Monday — with more on the way.

The next bout of precipitation will be coming from the cold Gulf of Alaska, so it will be a chilly rain today and Wednesday. Heavy snow will fall in the mountains and even the Coast Range, so if you’re traveling east or west, expect snow.

The air aloft will cool, so snowflakes will drop down to city levels maybe on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day if enough moisture is left. Don’t be surprised. Christmas Day looks cold and mostly dry.

OK, as promised, let’s review some rainfall from November from your friends and neighbors: Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 11.84 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 6.50 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 20.99 inches; Phil Delany, Dole Valley, 14.60 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 4.68 inches; Pete Conrad, near Tukes Mountain, 6.38 inches; Dave Campbell, 1 mile west of Heisson, 6.50 inches; Bill Sobolewski, Livingston Mountain, 9.07 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 4.89 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha,4.88 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 3.70 inches; Dan Hein, Camas, 7.21 inches; Murphy Dennis, Rawson Road near Clark Rifles, 10.29 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 6.36 inches; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 9.62 inches.
