Fort Vancouver point guard Kyron Lowe-Ash scored a game-high 17 points while dishing out six assists without a turnover. He capped his night Wednesday by hitting a tying layup and adding a game-winning free throw with 2.6 seconds remaining as the Trappers defeated visiting R.A. Long, 56-55.
The game-winning play was set up when the Lumberjacks missed a free throw with eight seconds left. Lowe-Ash drove to the basket, scored and drew the foul, completing the three-point play with his lone made free throw in four attempts.
Fort Vancouver improved to 3-4.
The game was a contrast in styles, as 11 of Fort Vancouver’s 18 field goals were from behind the arc while the Lumberjacks relied on superior size.
“We hit a ton of threes,” Trappers coach James Ensley said, initially over a zone defense then continuing to hit over sagging man-to-man. “We took quality shots. We had too many turnovers, but we’re a young team and that’s what happens.”
