They had so much going against them toward the end of the game.
Three Prairie girls had fouled out.
There were two technical fouls called against the Falcons.
And they were trailing by two points late in overtime.
Jozie Tangeman changed everything for Prairie.
The mood. The score. The game.
Tangeman buried a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left and also hit the free throw after a foul was called, giving her a four-point play and a 54-52 non-league girls basketball victory for Prairie (5-1) over rival Skyview.
“It’s crazy. I always wanted to hit a game-winner like that. I don’t know. It’s just so intense,” Tangeman said.
This was a battle of the two most prominent programs in the region. Prairie has six state titles and decades of accomplishments. Skyview has a state title and a run of recent success that includs wins over Prairie in previous seasons.
“We wanted to beat them really bad,” Tangeman said. “It was a little revenge. They beat us two years in a row. We needed it.”
The Falcons did not panic when they lost their floor leader — Cherita Daugherty — to her fifth foul with 1:31 left in overtime. Then Skyview’s Hanna Van Nortwick buried a 3-pointer to give the Storm (3-1) a four-point lead at 51-47.
Tangeman responded just seconds later with a 3-pointer of her own.
“This is big,” Prairie coach Brett Johnson said. “We were down, and Cherita went out, but I wasn’t really worried because they always fight.”
Tangeman said it was a matter of sticking together.
Prairie forced a turnover on the other end, but then missed two shots to take the lead. Skyview’s Maddie Lord hit one free throw with 9 seconds left in OT, setting the stage for the final shot.
Grace Prom drove the lane, kicked it out to Tangeman for the win.
“I was at my spot in the corner. I was hoping she would see me, and she did,” Tangeman said.
Tangemen made four 3-pointers in the game and finished with a game-high 18 points. Macey Hsu added 12 points, and Daugherty had 10 for the Falcons.
Sydney Friauf led the Storm with 16 points. She also had nine rebounds. Van Nortwick finished with 11 points, and Ashlee Comastro had nine points and 15 rebounds.
Prairie made six 3-pointers in the first quarter and jumped out to an 11-point lead. Skyview chipped away at the deficit and took its first lead of the game at the end of the third quarter on a shot from Lord.
There were six lead changes in the fourth quarter.
Skyview will be haunted by its free throw shooting in this one. The Storm were 13 of 28, including 1 of 4 on the shots after Prairie technical fouls.
