Weather Eye: The next several days should be good for storm-watching

It was stormy Saturday at the beach but not too bad here in the valleys. Lots of gray skies and about a quarter of an inch of rain fell in the Vancouver area as of 5 pm. The large storm that was forecast to bring gusty winds and moderate to heavy rain stacked up parallel to the coast and kept most of the winds and rains locally at bay.

The front was forecast to finally move inland overnight and early this morning, so I am anticipating more rain fell and maybe some breezy conditions. Along the Long Beach Peninsula, high surf warnings were out for waves 20 feet or higher pounding the beaches. And they did. It was a perfect day for storm-watching.

It appears the next several days will be good storm-watching weather at the coast and here, as well. Two potent storms will move inland Monday and Tuesday for high winds along the coast and winds here in Clark County maybe in the 35- to 50-mph range.

Rain will be the big weather story the next few days as 5 to 7 inches of rain should fall in the coastal mountains and Cascades, allowing many streams to reach flood stage.

Freezing levels will average above the mountains passes, and rain will fall even up to the higher ski resorts, then cooler air behind the fronts will lower snow levels back down. I don’t see much gain in snow pack until the weekend. We may dive into a period of cooler weather toward Christmas, with good mountain snows.

That strong east wind was still blowing Saturday in eastern Clark County, with gusts to 45 mph. That kept highs in the 40s, with cold air from the Columbia Basin. At 5 p.m. in Western Washington, temperatures ranged from 40 to 56 degrees.
