The Ridgefield Spudders might not have a lot of varsity girls basketball experience, but they have a lot of basketball experience.

And Wednesday night, the Spudders experienced their first win of the season, the first win for their new coach, and for most of the players, the first win in their high school careers.

Sarah Jenkins scored 17 points, leading the Spudders to a 47-37 victory over Heritage in a non-league contest.

Jenkins is one of eight freshmen on the team, one of the five starting freshmen.

“Even though we’re young, we know each other,” Jenkins said. “We’ve been playing together since the fifth grade.”

The stakes are a bit higher now as varsity players, and now the Spudders no longer have to worry about when they will pick up their first win. Ridgefield lost its season opener on Monday, but this night, the Spudders were able to close out an opponent.

“It’s very rewarding,” Jenkins said.

First-year head coach Tom Klutz was thrilled, too.

“I figure we’re going to win some game we shouldn’t win, and I figure we’ll lose some games we shouldn’t lose,” Klutz said. “All I know is years down the road this group is going to be amazing. I have some really good kids with basketball IQ.”

Jenkins scored 10 of her points in an 14-0 run for Ridgefield at the end of the third quarter. Trailing by four, Jenkins hit a 3-pointer to spark the Spudders. She would connect on another 3-pointer to end the period.

“I want to say luck,” Jenkins said with a smile when asked about the key to that crucial stretch.

Then she thought better of those moments.

“Talking. Good passing. Defense. It was a team effort,” Jenkins said.

Kylie Greenwald, who finished with 15 points, also had a 3-pointer in the decisive run for Ridgefield.

Ridgefield would score the first two points of the fourth quarter to take a 12-point lead.

Heritage would cut the deficit to five points with a little more than three minutes left in the game, but the Class 2A Spudders had enough to hold off the 4A Timberwolves.

Vanessa Brown led Heritage with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Cassidy Morris had seven points and six steals for the Timberwolves.
