Spencer Head of Georgia’s Dalton State College garnered NAIA All-America status by placing seventh at the organization’s national championships Nov. 21 in Charlotte, N.C.
The Camas High School graduate ran the 8-kilometer (5-mile) course at McAlpine Park in 24 minutes, 47.9 seconds.
The Roadrunners finished 11th in the team race. They were ranked No. 11 going into the national meet.
“Spencer’s fantastic All-American finish is the break through we knew he has been capable of for the last two years,” co-coach Andy Meyer told the DSC website dsroadrunners.com.
The top 30 individual finishers claim All-America honors. There were 36 teams and 326 runners competing in the men’s championship, with titles going to Geoffrey Kipchumba of William Carey and the Oklahoma City University team.
Men’s soccer
Soccer players still alive in College Cup
When Creighton visits Akron on Saturday for an NCAA men’s soccer quarterfinal match, it will be a reunion for several players from Clark County.
Niko De Vera and Anthony Macchione, both 2014 Camas High grads, play for Akron. Peter Prescott, who graduated from Mountain View in the spring, plays for Creighton.
The local player remaining in the tournament who is seeing the most action is Stanford sophomore Foster Langsdorf. His Cardinal travel to Wake Forest on Saturday for an NCAA quarterfinal match. Langsdorf, a Mountain View graduate, appeared in both of Stanford’s tournament wins so far. He started and played 66 minutes in Sunday’s win over Ohio State.
Langsdorf has six goals and two assists in 20 appearances this season for the Cardinal.
De Vera and Macchione have both played in reserve roles for Akron. Both played in the Zips first-round 6-1 win over Rutgers, but neither appeared in last week’s 2-1 win over Souther Methodist. De Vera, a defender, has played in 16 games this season and has one assist. Macchione, a forward, has scored two goals in 13 appearances off the bench this season.
At Creighton, Prescott has played in 17 games and scored one goal for Creighton. A defender, he started the Blue Jays first post-season match, a 5-1 win over Drake on Nov. 22.
Each of the four played in the Portland Timbers youth academy before heading to college.
