The Clark County Youth Football and Titans Youth Foundation Food Drive collected 70,139 pounds of food for the Clark County Food Bank.
The total collection was up from the 67,130 pounds last year.
According to food drive organizer Dylan Henry, 23 of the 49 CCYF teams that participated in the event collected more than 500 pounds of food. The food drive took place on Saturday during the annual CCYF kickoff jamboree at District Stadium in Battle Ground.
The Cardinals Black team of fourth- and fifth-graders collected the most food — 6,705 pounds. A close second was the Tigers grades 2-3 team, which collected 6,420 pounds. The players who collected the most food were Caulin Mecham and Chase Mecham from the Cardinals Black grades 4-5 team and Cole McClennen from grades 2-3 Tigers 2/3. Each of them received Nike Employee Store pass.
Union High students Dylan Henry and Keith Lobis organized the event this year. Nolan Henry, who organized the event in previous years, is now a freshman at Notre Dame.
Earlier this summer, Nolan Henry was recognized as one of Sodexo Foundation’s Stop Hunger Regional Honorees. That honor included a $1,000 grant. According to Dylan Henry, the Titans Youth Foundation will use grant money over the next two years to grow the CCYF Food Drive and its athlete involvement.
During a separate food drive Aug. 21-23 at Harmony Sports Complex, the Washington Timbers Football Club collected 4,540 pounds of food during a summer tournament that involved teams from around the Pacific Northwest. JT Correy and Owen Murphy organized that first-time event.
Dylan Henry credited volunteers from working through challenging weather on Saturday to make the food drive a success. Among the volunteers were members of CCYF, athletes and members of the honor society at Union High School, and Kohl’s employees.
Teams that collected more than 1,500 pounds earned an end-of-season pizza party.
Standup paddleboarders race at Washougal
Autumn-like weekend weather kept away some competitors, but Sunday’s weather cooperated for the second SUP Salmon Classic standup paddle board races in Washougal.
Racing took place on the Columbia River at Cottonwood Beach in Washougal, and featured events for novice to elite-level competitors.
Rene Carroll, spokesperson for the event, said there were fewer participants than in 2014 because weather kept away many competitors from outside the area.
“The athletes who did come were rewarded with a very calm river,” she said.
Tucker Ingalls won the feature event of the day. He completed the 8-mile long-course race in 45 minutes and 11.1 seconds, just more than 2 seconds ahead of Michael Tavares. Derek Fromm was third in 45:25.36.
A total of 23 standup paddleboarders raced the 8-mile course. Fiona Wylde was the female winner of the long-course event. She finished fifth overall with a time of 49:06.04.
The short-course 4-mile race was won by Steve Doucette in 29:37.77. The female short-course winner was Debora Owen in 32:15.33.
The top three finishers in the 2-mile novice race were Jeff Landrie, Ronald Zito and Louise Botterill.
Carroll said the future of the SUP Salmon Classic depends upon finding a title sponsor for the event. The City of Washougal has been the main sponsor in the first two years of the race.
