Church congregation to serve homeless shelter

In place of its normal Sunday church service, the Vancouver Abundant Life Church is sprucing up a local homeless shelter. Church members will be working this weekend with a landscaping company to improve the grounds, repair fencing and paint at Giving Grace Ministries at 1101 W. 13th St., Vancouver. Abundant Life Church, which has three campuses in the Portland-metro area, has done similar work before.

“This is the first time we’ve canceled church services to do it,” said Pastor Seth McRae. “You can’t solve all the problems, but we can do something to make it better.”

On Sunday morning, Red Chair Salon will be on hand to provide free haircuts to the homeless and the Oregon Humane Society will provide pet care. There will be music, food and clothing donations — the makings for what McRae describes as a street party for the homeless community that will go until about 1 p.m.
