Firefighters on Sunday night completely contained a wildfire that burned about 60 acres of land in western Skamania County, several miles past Dougan Falls.
Throughout the weekend, crews worked to suppress the Gold Rush Fire, about 12 miles northeast of Washougal, and the blaze was reportedly 100 percent contained by 8 p.m. Sunday, according to Department of Natural Resources spokesman Brian Poehlein. They plan to remain on scene for the next few days to do mop-up work and use thermal imaging equipment to look for hot spots in the area, he said.
The blaze, on DNR-managed land along Forest Road 2000, was first reported Aug. 17, with crews reporting flames about 30 feet tall.
Investigators have since determined the fire was human-caused, and fire managers have encouraged anyone with any information on the fire to contact authorities. The DNR’s regional dispatch can be reached at 360-575-5787.
The Cougar Creek Fire, which has burned more than 30,000 acres southeast of Mount Adams, remained 15 percent contained Monday.
