The ALS Association is hosting walks in six cities in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
The Walk to Defeat ALS events will feature family friendly activities, such as music, face painting and food. Registration for the local event begins at 11 a.m. Oct. 3 at Esther Short Park, with the opening ceremony scheduled at noon. All money raised funds local care services, research and awareness. Registered walkers who raise $75 or more are eligible to receive an official event T-shirt on event day.
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The disease robs people of the ability to walk, talk and control their body.
In 2014, about 175,000 people participated in Walk to Defeat ALS events across the country, raising more than $32 million.
