A transient man who crashed a stolen pickup into the front door of a Camas house was sentenced Thursday in Clark County Superior Court to six months in jail.

Shayn M. Kaz, 28, pleaded guilty to hit-and-run, driving under the influence and first-degree malicious mischief in connection with the June 15 incident, according to court documents.

In exchange for his guilty pleas, the prosecution agreed to dismiss charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving and second-degree malicious mischief, court records show.

According to a probable cause affidavit, at about 11:15 a.m. June 15, the Washington State Patrol received multiple reports of a red Nissan pickup crossing lanes and nearly hitting barriers and other vehicles on state Highway 14. Camas police learned that the pickup had been reported stolen the night before.

Minutes after the first reports came in, police received a call about the same truck crashing into the front door of a house at 2725 N.W. 24th Ave. in Camas’ Prune Hill area. The pickup had become lodged in the house’s brick entryway. The driver, later identified as Kaz, kicked out the vehicle’s back window and fled the scene, police said.

Officers from multiple agencies and a police K-9 helped Camas police search for Kaz. They later found him a few blocks away near Northwest 23rd Avenue and Iris Court, hiding in the bed of a landscaping pickup, police said.
