Camas-Washougal’s first trip to a Babe Ruth Baseball World Series ended with a Wednesday loss to a team from Maine.
A four-run second inning was the difference as New England champion Tri-Valley beat Camas-Washougal 7-3 at the Babe Ruth World Series for 13-year-olds at Jamestown, N.Y. At 1-3 in pool play, Camas-Washougal did not advance to the elimination phase of the tournament.
Camas-Washougal leadoff hitter Gideon Malychewski capped a strong tournament by going 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored on Wednesday.
Tyler Forner was 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored. Kolby Broadbent had a double and RBI, and Logan Kearsey had a base hit for Camas-Washougal.
Jonny Pruett doubled in the first inning and tripled in the second to lead the Maine team to an early 6-1 lead. Camas-Washougal pulled within 6-3 after five innings but could not make a final rally.
A win Wednesday would have advanced Camas-Washougal to Thursday’s quarterfinal round ahead of Maine, which suffered its first loss of the tournament early Wednesday before taking on Camas-Washougal.
Metro rained out
At the 14-year-olds Babe Ruth World Series in Pine Bluff, Ark., wet weather pushed the final day of pool play to Thursday.
Hazel Dell Metro (3-1) can finish atop its pool if it defeats Virginia champion Gainesville-Haymarket (4-0) on Thursday. The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. PDT.
HDM has qualified for the elimination phase of the tournament. If it wins Thursday, it will get a bye into the semifinals to be played Friday afternoon and evening. If HDM loses to Gainseville-Haymarket, it will play a aloser-out game earlier on Friday to try to adance to the semifinals.
